The Kenya Care foundation offers a new future to HIV infected mothers and nowadays also some fathers. Their diagnosis is like a death sentence. The mothers and their children are often repudiated by their community and forced to leave their homes. We teach them how to deal with their disease, improve their self-esteem and provide for their own needs.
We are working with Self Help Groups in Kilifi Country, just north of Mombasa, Kenya. The duration of the program for a group is 4 years. Four groups already graduated. Another 4 groups are in the program now. We try to establish at least one new group every year. Each group has 15-25 members. In average these mothers have 3 or 4 children. We don’t just hand out money to these mothers: we teach them how to build up a future for themselves. Fully independent, confident and self-reliant.
