The first time we arrived in Kenya we were deeply impressed by the local people because of their friendliness and cordiality. This encouraged us to explore further than just the hotels and beaches. In 2007 we, Desiré Roes and Ietje van Hintum, began with volunteer work in Mtwapa. We cycled, together with social workers from the clinic, to meet with HIV/AIDS patients and provide them with information on the disease and to encourage people to be tested. During this period, we found that behind the friendliness and cordiallity, an inconceivable misery lay hidden. We became aware, that many HIV positive, single mother’s lived in Mtwapa/Shanzu, without any means of income and cast out by their families because of their illness. |
